SKIN LIKE A GRATER

Keratosis pilaris, also known colloquially as grater skin, usually occurs for the first time in childhood and primarily affects girls and young women. From a medical point of view, the grater skin is an enormous burden for many sufferers due to the unsightly complexion. Correct skin care can help.

Safe keratin deposits
If the keratinization of the skin around the hair follicles is disturbed and nodules appear as a result, this is called keratosis pilaris. It is not a disease, but a likely genetic disorder that occurs in up to 80% of all children and adolescents. The nodules are harmless and are caused by deposits of keratin - a natural, endogenous protein that occurs in the cornea, hair and nails.

Skin like a grater
The skin of the grater appears to differing degrees from person to person, which means that the associated negative effects also differ significantly. Most often, those affected complain of rough skin on the outer sides of the upper arms, on the front of the thighs, on the buttocks and / or on the cheeks. The skin feels like a grater in these areas. In addition, the nodules are perceived by many as unsightly - especially when they appear on the face. This in turn can be psychologically stressful.

All skin types affected
In contrast to other disorders and skin diseases, light and dark skin types are equally affected by keratosis pilaris. The keratin deposits differ in that the nodules on light skin tend to shine through reddish, while with increasingly darker skin tone they appear more brown. With all ethnicities, the grater skin is completely harmless and mostly regresses by itself, which is why adults are affected much less often.

Cosmetically support
So far there is no cure, nor is it considered medically necessary. For everyone who wants to take cosmetic action against grater skin, there are a number of measures that promise relief:

  • CLEANING
The affected skin areas should be cleaned regularly and thoroughly with pH-neutral soap or washing gel. Click your way through our products - here you will definitely find the right one for cleaning your skin.

  • Care
Moisturizing care with creams or lotions containing uric acid (urea) can refine the complexion. Care products with salicylic acid can also help (e.g. [W] ASH AWAY Purifying Gel Cleanser).

  • peelings
On the one hand, superficial keratinization can be removed with peelings at home. On the other hand, regular treatment with fruit acid peelings by a dermatologist or beautician is recommended. This can be used to open clogged pores and remove deep-lying cornifications.

  • Sunshine
Vitamin D is good for the soul and for the skin. Regular contact with the sun can strengthen the skin's resistance thanks to the positive effects of UV-A and UV-B radiation. Always pay attention to sufficient UV protection, e.g. BGS sun protection (SPF 30).

  • liquid
A good supply of moisture to the skin is essential. In addition to the right care, this can be done very easily with sufficient fluid intake in the form of water and unsweetened teas.

  • Microneedling or laser treatments
The affected skin is perforated with very small needles or a laser. On the one hand, this promotes the breakdown of keratin deposits and, on the other hand, the formation of healthy cells.

Don't let Keratoris pilaris bother you. There are a few things you can do about it!
